Signs of a System Rather Than a Fault

Most of these have a dull explanation that has to be eliminated before they mean anything, which is exactly why they get over-interpreted by anybody selling a repipe.

What points to a system rather than a fault: repeated leaks in different places, flow that has fallen across the whole house, discolored water at several fixtures, and pinholes. Each has an innocent explanation that must be ruled out before a repipe is justified.

Flow that has faded over years

Worst at the furthest fixtures, often worse on hot than cold, and so gradual that nobody noticed it happening. On galvanized steel that is the signature symptom.

Rule out first: a partly closed valve, a pressure reducing valve that has drifted, scaled aerators throughout the house, and a change on the utility side.

Discolored water after the house stands

Rusty or brown water on the first draw after a weekend away, clearing after a minute, points at deposits inside the pipe rather than at the supply.

Rule out first: work on the water main in the street, and a water heater at the end of its life shedding its own sediment, which produces the same effect on hot only.

Repeat leaks in the same material

Several failures in a short period, in different places, on the same kind of pipe. This is the strongest signal on the list because it is the only one that is directly about the system.

Write down dates and locations as they happen. Reconstructing them afterwards is hard and the reconstruction is always less convincing.

Pinholes rather than joints

Leaks appearing in the middle of straight lengths rather than at fittings suggest the pipe wall itself rather than the workmanship, which is a different conversation from a joint that was made badly.

It is worth saying precisely where each leak was, because "at a fitting" and "in the middle of a run" point in opposite directions.

And what none of them proves

That a repipe is necessary. Each one is a reason to have the system looked at by somebody competent. None is a verdict, and we do not issue verdicts.
