A Decision About the System, Not About the Leak

Nobody sets out to repipe a house. They set out to fix a leak, and somewhere in the conversation the question changes shape. These are the things that legitimately change it.

The summary

Repiping is a decision about a system rather than about a leak. What moves it is the material, the age, how many leaks there have already been and where they happened. What should not move it is a single failure in an otherwise sound system.

How many times this has happened

One leak is an event. Three leaks in eighteen months on the same material in different places is a pattern, and a pattern is about the system rather than about any of the individual failures.

Keep a note of dates and locations. It is the most persuasive thing you can bring to the conversation and almost nobody has it.

Whether the failures share a cause

Three leaks at three threaded joints on galvanized steel are the same failure three times. Three leaks in three different materials in three parts of the house are three separate events that happen to have coincided.

The first argues for a system decision. The second does not, and a contractor who treats them the same way is not distinguishing.

What is being opened anyway

If a bathroom is being renovated, or a ceiling has to come down for other reasons, the marginal cost of replacing pipe in that area falls enormously. Sequencing is a genuine and legitimate reason to do more than the minimum.

The reverse applies too: a house with no work planned and one accessible leak is a house where a repair is a reasonable answer.

What the material is

Where a material has a documented defect history across an era of installation — which polybutylene does — the leak in front of you is weaker evidence than the material behind it.

That is a reason to consider the system. It is not, by itself, a verdict, and this site does not offer one.

And the one that should not move it

An age-based rule. If somebody tells you copper lasts fifty years and yours is forty-eight, ask where the figure comes from. We publish no such number and this page explains why — the honest version of that claim depends on water chemistry, pressure, velocity and how it was installed, none of which is in the number.
